Artist Katya Mora has spent two weeks working within the studios on new work whilst on a visit to Oxford from Mexico. She will exhibit work in Gallery 8 from 29th August - 31st August and will also give a talk about her work on 31st August at 7pm.
My work explores processes of artistic creation linked to transformations
in nature -that is, the material world as well as human nature-. I‘m
interested in investigating the cycles of changes that happen in natural
surroundings and the relations of those cycles with human nature.
Throughout my artistic production I‘ve experimented with different
kinds of materials, using them as vehicles for the transformation of artistic
pieces: production of organic batteries to explore electricity, natural
dyes to observe the transformation of a painting, rusting metals to
obtain pigments, mixtures of organic matter (fruit, vegetables or food)
with artistic materials (plaster, powdered graphite, mineral pigments)
to study the boundaries between one and the other. I mean to extract
the proper nature of each material, that is, to subject them to processes
in which their forms are expressed and in which I can observe the
specificity of each material regarding the time and manners of their
transformations. My enquiries regarding materials relate to my interest
in exploring the ways energy affects matter and more precisely, the hypothesis
that a body (any kind) gives us hints that show what affects it.
Through different means, such as paintings, installations and interventions,
I have sought a diversity of ways to materialize non-visible forces
like electricity, people‘s vital energy and the biological properties of
matter.
For many years, I‘ve dedicated myself to investigate processes of subjetification
through self-awareness and artistic creation, resorting to different
disciplines from the Chinese Taoist tradition (I Ching -The Book
of Changes- and BaZi -The Four Pillars of the Personal Energy), and to
concepts from biology and cognitive sciences in relation to the behaviour
of living beings. At present, in my artistic practice I‘m dealing with
these questions in a more direct manner, and I wonder: is it possible to
make works as complex as a person, comprised of relations, variations
and mysteries?
