Magdalen Road Artist Studios in Oxford was set up in August 1999 by Diana Bell & Kevin Slingsby, with the aim of providing affordable studio space to local artists.
In May 2011, Magdalen Road Studios was registered as a charity - Registered Charity No. 1142112 - the objectives of which are to promote the visual arts to the general public through direct engagement with artists in a studio setting. To achieve these objectives, the charity provides and manages affordable studios and exhibition space and creates opportunities for the public to participate in the visual arts within this setting.
Magdalen Road Studios is overseen by a board of trustees, supported by a studio manager and the studio members themselves. Studio artists contribute to studio life by taking on roles such as curating shows, fundraising and promotion, developing the website and helping to maintain the building.
Magdalen Road Studio artists engage in a wide range of practices, including: painting, portraiture, pottery, film making, photography, printmaking, sculpture, drawing, textiles, instillation art and are also developing new art practices.
The studios bring together artists from different cultural backgrounds to work and exchange ideas. The studios have been involved in projects with artists/colleagues in India, France, Germany, The Netherlands, Romania and Hungary.
We are now welcoming applications for Associate Membership.
Associates will be part of the Magdalen Road Studios Community, be offered the opportunity to participate in at least one annual exhibition (with details of this exhibition to be determined) as well as other opportunities as they arise.
Associates will be listed on the website, have opportunities to feature on the MRS Instagram, participate in events at the studios.
Associates will help determine the future of this program. So you will have the opportunity to get involved and help continue to help Magdalen Road Studios continue to grow and thrive.
